Program Information
- Classes are 60 minutes in length
- Classes occur weekly throughout the school year
- Students may progress through more than one level within the school year depending on their level of commitment.
- Program content includes: Water Proficiency, First Aid, and Rescue.
- Develops swimming strength and efficiency.
- Skill drills enhance capability in the water, good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment.
Bronze Program Levels
- Bronze Star
- Includes Basic First Aid
- It is recommended that students either complete the Canadian Swim Patrol Program and/or are close to turning 12 years of age when starting Bronze Star.
- Develop problem solving and decision making skills related to water safety and rescue as individuals and in teams.
- No exam: successful candidates for the Bronze Star program will be recommended by their instructor at the end of the school year and will be invoiced for their award and registration with the Lifesaving Society at that time.
- Bronze Medallion
- Includes Emergency First Aid
- Students must have passed Bronze Star or be 13 years of age to enter Bronze Medallion.
- Gain an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn the different tows, carries and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues of increased risk.
- Exam: successful candidates will be recommended by their instructor in June if they have demonstrated the required skills. There is a fee of approximately $40.00 to cover the cost of the exam, as well as the registration with the Lifesaving Society. There is no guarantee of student success in the exam.
- Bronze Cross
- Includes Standard First Aid
- Students must have passed Bronze Medallion to enter Bronze Cross.
- More advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross teaches the difference between lifesaving and lifeguarding, the principles of emergency procedures, and teamwork.
- Exam: successful candidates will be recommended by their instructor in June if they have demonstrated the required skills. There is a fee of approximately $40.00 to cover the cost of the exam, as well as the registration with the Lifesaving Society. There is no guarantee of student success in the exam.
