Safety Measures to Maintain Social Distancing
Program Information
- Semi-Private Red Cross & Lifesaving Swim Lessons
- 30 minute classes
- Heated outdoor pool in a pristine park setting
- Instructors; Lisa Graves
- Ages: 2+
- Dates: 1 week sessions throughout June, July & August
- Hours:
- AM: 9:30 - 11:30
- PM 1: 1:00 - 3:00
- PM 2: 3:00 - 5:00
Safety Measures to Maintain Social Distancing
- Scheduling classes:
- Families will be grouped together when possible
- Shallow end classes only 1 social circle
- Deep end classes maximum 2 social circles
- Instructors will social distance during classes & wear face shield as needed
- Preschool - Swim Kids 4 classes will require someone in their social circle to be in the water responsible for holding & assisting the swimmer. This could be a parent, sibling, or any person in your social circle.
- Time will be scheduled between class to disinfect equipment and facilities
- Parents are invited to bring a lawn chair to observe classes from outside the pool area
- Changerooms will not be available, washrooms will be available for urgent needs only
Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Course
- Registration for 2021 will be dependent on the current COVID restrictions in place in the spring

Program Requisites
- 15+ years old, with a current Bronze Cross Certification
- Ontario Parts & Recreation: High Five Certification
- Includes courses, manuals, and certifications
Course Components
- Swim screening of candidate's swim abilities
- Online learning
- Classroom/Pool training
- Apprenticeship: may be delayed due to COVID-19 and new safety measures in place
Lifesaving & First Aid Course

In a regular setting, Lifesaving & First Aid courses require close contact between participants. We are closely monitoring government and health regulations and have made changes and accommodations to the program that will allow us to safely deliver these courses.

Course Components
In a regular setting, Lifesaving & First Aid courses require close contact between participants. We are closely monitoring government and health regulations and have made changes and accommodations to the program that will allow us to safely deliver these courses.
Safety Measures
The following measures will be in place to minimize contact and ensure a safe environment for all:
- Each participant will be required to attend with a partner who is in their social circle. This will allow the pair to partner up for all contact first aid and water based rescues.
- Both participants must be able to swim competently in deep water
- Partners attending who are not yet eligible for the Patrol or Bronze courses will have the opportunity to work on Red Cross Swim levels to develop their swimming and rescue skills and work towards a Basic First Aid Certification. The fee for this participant is $150.
Washrooms
- One portable washroom will be available and sanitized daily
- Participants will be asked to wear a mask and use the hand sanitizer provided
Change rooms
- Will not be available
- Participants should bring clothes to put on over their swim suits
Social Distancing
- Will be considered by the instructor during planning and teaching
- Participants will be responsible for maintaining social distancing and must have a mask to wear when social distancing is not possible
Participant Personal Equipment
- Each candidate and partner must bring at least one noodle to use for rescues
- Drinking water will not be available; bring enough for the day
- All participants must bring personal hand sanitizer with them for use throughout the day
General Course Information
- Classes will run from 9:30am-3:30pm Monday – Friday
- Participants will be in and out of the water several times throughout the day practicing various skills
- Participants will be required to complete additional nightly work as assigned to prepare for the next day’s activities
Program Requisites for Candidates
- 11+ years old
- Completed Swim Kids Level 10
Program Requisites for Partners
- 11+ years old
- Must be able to swim competently in deep water
Receive certification with Lifesaving Society in:
- Patrol: Rookie, Ranger, Star
- Bronze: Star, Medallion, Cross
- First Aid: Basic, Emergency, Standard
Course Components
- Candidates will participate in a week of first aid and rescue training
- Candidates will work together in an outdoor setting to develop and apply their rescue skills
- Emphasis is placed on learning in a relaxing, fun outdoor environment while preparing for a final exam. Days will be spent soaking up the sun, working hard and earning those valuable playtime breaks.
- A Lifesaving examiner will examine all candidates who the instructor feels are prepared for the exam on the morning of the last day
- The final afternoon will be spent celebrating and kicking back having fun at Dogwood Acres
